When a video game or software gets updated to an entirely new major version, usually you can expect some extremely significant changes. I am more concerned that, as of now, Blizzard is touting the new progression system and aesthetic items as the primary selling points of this major update. My main gripe about Heroes 2.0 though is not so much that they are adding these new aesthetics items. But how often in a MOBA game do you really have the chance to taunt someone? If anything, I would be concerned that this just leaves players vulnerable to getting ganked by a stealthed enemy. After hearing community complaints, they added Hero Mastery Taunts as a replacement. Now, these skins are just like any other you find in a Loot Chest.

Earning a Master Skin is no easy task, and shows your commitment towards a particular hero. They’ve also completely done away with the work required to earn Master Skins, which act as a badge of honor in the current system. What I find frustrating is that Blizzard took away the ability to buy items directly with money and obfuscated their prices using added in-game currencies. The concept of loot boxes and their place in video games is a relatively controversial one, and worthy of a whole discussion on its own. Instead, we now have to gamble on loot boxes instead, which is a huge downgrade in terms of value per dollar. These Loot Chests also took away our ability to directly purchase any skins we want with real money. Instead, we have to buy gems to then buy the bundle. We can no longer spend that $14.99 on a new hero + skin bundle. You might not realize that spending those 50 gems is the same as spending $9.99 (or whatever the conversion rate ends up being). This is a psychological tactic to promote buying more items, as your brain doesn’t associate how much these items cost in terms of real money. They have now obfuscated the true cost of these by introducing a new in-game currency called Gems. Previously, heroes could be bought with either gold or money, and most skins and mounts could be bought with real money (save for master skins, which were bought via gold). Hero level XP requirements have also been tuned to support this, making leveling more frequent and feel “more meaningful.”

Player progression is now “unlimited” in the sense that your account level no longer caps at level 40, and instead is the sum of the levels of all of your unlocked heroes. There are two primary and significant changes coming in Heroes 2.0: an updated progression system and new loot and customization options. Or at least that’s what they are claiming. This next update, though, is planned to be their biggest yet. Heroes of the Storm is officially receiving its first truly major update: Heroes 2.0. Since launch, Blizzard has done a tremendous job keeping the game constantly updated with new heroes, new maps, and frequent balance updates. But these changes are far from what the game really needs.
